What size is a regulation data plate?

Answer

The FAA regulations does not define a specific size for the aircraft data plate. The plate must be fireproof, have the required information, and be secured so that it will not likely be defaced or removed. Our industrial nameplates are similar in size to the data plate you can get from the EAA. Our data plates are a better choice for you as they come embossed with your information and the raised embossed lettering is very durable compared to ink or engraving.

Choosing between our products

Answer

The CR80 is our larger industrial nameplate, it measures 3.375” by 2.125” as is made of stainless steel. It has predrilled 4mm screw or rivet holes in the 4 corners which makes for a very secure mounting on your fuselage. You can emboss up to 10 rows, each with 30 characters.
The CR50 is a smaller industrial nameplate that measures 3.5” by 1.72” and is made of stainless steel.

Are fasteners included?

Although you can select from a variety of general purpose fasteners on the next preview page (ie screws, nails, etc) we recommend that you procure an appropriate fastener yourself, such as aircraft-grade aluminum rivets. Each of the four holes measures 4mm in diameter.

Is it durable?

Answer

Our industrial nameplates and Dog Tags are made of stainless steel. The printing is embossed which does not rub off like ink printing. Embossed lettering is an excellent choice as it is long lasting, does not rub off, and will show through paint.

Question 5

Where do I mount the data plate?

Answer

The aircraft identification plate must be secured to the aircraft fuselage exterior so that it is legible to a person on the ground, and must be either adjacent to and aft of the rearmost entrance door or on the fuselage surface near the tail surfaces.

Question 6

What serial number should I put on it?

Answer

If your aircraft was built using plans or a kit the first choice would be to use the number assigned to the plans or the kit by the vendor. This helps with continuity of support for new owners if the aircraft is sold in the future.

Question 7

Should I put a year on the plate?

Answer

There is no requirement to put a year on your data plate. Some builder’s like to put the year the aircraft was completed and other interesting information.

Question 8

Do I need a date plate for the engine?

Answer

Marking your engine is not a requirement of the regulations but is a recommended practice from the EAA. If you do want to put a data plate (or any identification) on your engine you could consider using on of our smaller 2-hole tags for this purpose.
