The era spanning from the late 70s to mid 2010s covered many conflicts including: The Cold War, Beirut, Central America, Bosnia, Somalia, Persian Gulf War (Desert Shield and Desert Storm), The War on Terror (Afghanistan and The Middle East), Operation Iraqi Freedom, and many more.
Regardless of where one served whether at home or overseas, the Dog Tags themselves were standardized depending on the branch of service.
During this period the Debossed Tags from the Vietnam era were replaced with the modern Embossed style still in use today, although some bases continued to use the older deboss machines to issue new tags. Even the No-notch tag was issued in 1967 some bases still continued to issue notched tags until supplies ran out.
The Social Security number was the only numerical identifier used on dogtags during this period, which was eventually phased out in the mid 2010s in favor of the DoD ID number. If you require tags with the DoD ID number please see our Modern Dog Tags templates.

Why are some 80s & 90s Era Tags debossed or have notches?
The notch on the Dog Tag was originally there to align it on a handheld transcription machine (Model 70 Addressograph Patent) which was used by field medics to quickly transfer the soldierβs information onto paper medical forms or burial records. This is also the reason why Dog Tags from earlier pre-electronic eras were debossed so that they became in effect the printing press to record information on paperwork using an ink ribbon. Notched Dog Tags were standard issue until December 1964 until the Department of Defense officially switched to Dog Tags without notches in early 1965. However, military bases with older notched-style tags in inventory still issued them until they ran out of stock or upgraded to modern emobossing machines.Are these authentic Dog Tags?
